How to Replace a Bathtub Faucet

If you want to replace a bathtub faucet, you must first remove the old one. If removing the old one is impossible, you need to hire a professional. You must be careful while doing the job because the exposed pipe might have interior or exterior threads. It can cost you thousands of dollars if you damage the pipe.

Remove escutcheon plate

Before replacing a bathtub faucet, remove the valve stem and escutcheon plate. These are usually attached with two or three screws and can be removed using pliers or a utility knife. You can replace the O-ring, which has probably fallen out or become corroded.

The escutcheon plate is a decorative piece that rests behind the handle of a faucet. This plate is usually attached to the wall with screws or caulking, and the screws are held in place by the plumbing fixture. First, you need to remove the screws and caulk if necessary. Then, use a razor scraper to scrape away any caulk that may be stuck to the plate.

Remove valve stem

To replace a bathtub faucet, you first need to remove the valve stem. There are two or three screws that secure the escutcheon plate to the stem. Remove the O-ring from the valve stem with pliers or your hands, and clean it with a utility knife. The O-ring is not necessary to replace, but it may be worth a try to keep it clean.

First, you must ensure you turn off the water supply to the bathtub faucet. This can be done through an access panel located behind the faucet. If you do not have access to the panel, turn off the water supply to the entire house.

Remove spout

Before installing a new bathtub faucet, remove the old spout. To do this, use a screwdriver or a wrench to loosen the spout’s set screw. If the screw is tight, you risk damaging the wall pipe. You can also use a flashlight to see the screw and feel it with your finger.

Then, disconnect the water supply and make sure the tub is empty. If it is not, you may need to turn off the main water supply. Make sure you have turned off the faucet before you remove the spout. This prevents water from spilling down the drain. Make sure you have towels nearby.

Install new faucet

If you’ve been struggling with dripping bathroom leaks, you may want to consider installing a new bathtub faucet. This easy DIY project will also give your bathroom fixtures a fresh look. You can buy the materials at your local Home Depot or online. Regardless of your choice, choosing a faucet that fits the existing plumbing perfectly is important.

First, remove the old bathtub faucet’s handles. This process is similar for both one and two-handled designs. Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove or insert the plastic cover from the handles. Then, loosen the screws on the handles with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

Measure spigot distance from the wall

When replacing your bathtub faucet, carefully measure the distance between the fixture and the wall. If the fixture is too far away, you can force the screw to loosen, causing damage to other parts of the tub. If you’re unsure of the measurement, ask a professional.

The spigot distance from the wall should be between one and two, seven-eight inches. You’ll want to ensure the spout is the same length as the existing one, or it won’t fit. To determine this distance, measure the length from the wall to the back edge of the threaded elbow. Then, add two and a quarter inches to the total length.

Remove Allen screw

First, remove the screw that secures the handle to the faucet. You may have to use a crowbar to pry the handle free from the faucet. If you can get it loose, you can replace the handle with a new one. You can use a screw extractor or a flathead screwdriver to remove the old screw.

You may have to use a larger driver if you cannot remove the screw with a flathead. It’s important to ensure the driver can fit inside the head of the screw because excessive tapping can cause the head to break.
